Will Robin, musicologist and contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Times, picked tunes for Wednesday, June 19 at Songs for Listening. Will is an assistant professor of musicology at the University of Maryland’s School of Music. His research explores how institutions structure the creation, dissemination, and reception of contemporary classical music in the U.S. He completed a PhD in musicology at UNC Chapel Hill in 2016, and is currently working on a book project on the composer collective Bang on a Can and new music in the 80s and 90s. Recent publications include an exploration of the term “indie classical” in the Journal of the Society for American Music and an article on new music and neoliberalism in the Journal of the American Musicological Society. As a public musicologist, Robin contributes to the Times and New Yorker, received an ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award in 2014 and tweets avidly at @seatedovation
