11-22-19 | Songs for Listening | Amy Russell
Amy Kolling Russell, Director of Programming for Carolina Performing Arts at UNC-CH, picked tunes for Friday, November 22 at Songs for Listening.
Here's a note from Amy on her selections:
"What a challenge to choose just five enduring songs to share. I started from the very personal … and chose six. These are enduring, for me, because they encapsulate the feelings of pivotal times in my life. Those pivotal times were months-long, and so each of these songs was on heavy rotation for weeks and now they really feel like old companions. Then, as I considered them for this project, it occurred to me that most of them also transcend, or endure past, hastily applied labels that have been cited to discount them: pop, simple, religious, esoteric, gimmick, woman. I think that when given their due they will reward deep listening."
In her work at CPA, Amy curates a multi-disciplinary performance series, and engages artists in teaching, research, and creation. Amy played a lead role in developing the vision for CPA’s newest venue, CURRENT, a black box theater & studio space dedicated to installations and co-creative experiences. Prior to joining CPA, Amy oversaw programming for the NC Symphony with a focus on deepening the institution’s relationships with artists and developing their commissioning strategy, while also serving as Executive Producer of their radio broadcast series. Amy holds a degree in performance from the UNC-CH and currently serves on the board of Triangle ArtWorks and the Arts Everywhere Campus Arts Council at UNC.
