04-17-19 | Songs for Listening | Amelia Meath
Singer and songwriter Amelia Meath (Sylvan Esso and Mountain Man) picked the tunes for Wednesday, April 17 at Songs for Listening. Amelia formed the group Mountain Man with Molly Erin Sarlé and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig while the three were students at Bennington College. They put out their debut record, Made the Harbor in 2010 and subsequently toured as part of Feist's band. In 2013, Amelia moved to Durham, NC and started the band Sylvan Esso with Nick Sanborn. Sylvan Esso has put out a pair of records, an eponymous debut release and a GRAMMY-nominated follow-up, What Now. In 2018, Mountain Man came back together to record and release Magic Ship, an album of new music on Nonesuch Records.
A memory of Amelia in performance: She’s the featured guest with Phil Cook and Friends on a sweltering midsummer’s night out at Sarah P.. Duke Gardens. Amelia joins the group as they tear into Willis Alan Ramsey’s Northeast Texas Women. She lent a sense of righteousness to that tune that it hadn’t had previously, managing to elevate and elucidate the whole affair — the song, Phil’s project, and the evening altogether.
