04-04-19 | Songs for Listening | Nick Sanborn
Multi-instrumentalist, electronic musician, and producer Nick Sanborn (Made of Oak) picked tunes at Songs for Listening for Thursday, April 4. Nick joined Megafaun — adding to the core trio of Joe Westerlund, Phil, and Brad Cook — for the group's final two years of touring. As a quartet, Megafaun was even more wonderfully disorienting and idiosyncratic, made of roughly equal doses: Americana (the old, weird kind), American minimalism, American jazz and funk (Professor Longhair and Bootsy Collins), and odd American music (Beefheart and Zappa). This week Songs for Listening features tunes picked by members and contributors to that fine band, Nick's picks are featured for Thursday.
Prior to joining Megafaun and moving to Durham, Nick was a stalwart on the Milwaukee scene with both his Made of Oak project and as a member of Collections of Colonies of Bees. Following the dissolution of Megafaun, Nick launched the project Sylvan Esso with Amelia Meath. That band, based here in Durham, has released two LPs Sylvan Esso and What Now, they've been nominated for a GRAMMY, and they’re headlining some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the world. In addition to his work on Sylvan Esso, Nick continues to release electronic music under the Made of Oak moniker.
