Mark Jacobson senior programming manager at University Musical Society (UMS) at the University of Michigan picked tunes for Tuesday, September 24 at Songs for Listening.
Mark is the principal curator of jazz, international traditional music & contemporary / art-rock presentations for UMS. He has produced a sequence of unique performance events, including a gala concert featuring and honoring pianist / composer Dave Brubeck; an MLK Day concert that included over 50 Detroit musicians celebrating the continued legacy of Detroit’s international musical contributions from bebop to Motown; The Big Squeeze, an accordion festival showcasing the broad international spectrum of the instrument; Falling Up & Getting Down, an open-to-the-public live skateboarding & music celebration in collaboration with Jason Moran featuring professional skateboarders, The Bandwagon, and Detroit-based DJs; and a concert with the Mos Def Big Band that paid tribute to hip-hop innovator and Detroit native J Dilla.
Before assuming his current position, Mark learned record company operations at Chesky Records and Knitting Factory Works, two NYC-based record labels. Mark grew up in Miami, FL and has degrees from the University of Miami and the University of Michigan. He is married to Zarena Aslami and father to twins, Sadie and Alexander.
