02-27-19 | Songs for Listening | William Tyler
The guitarist and composer William Tyler selected the song list for Wednesday, February 27 at Songs for Listening. William was brought up in Nashville, his father is a lawyer & songwriter (Eddy Arnold, LeAnn Rimes, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), with his sister, Elise, he owned and ran the East Nashville bar/club Stone Fox for five years. William spent his early career touring and recording with Nashville-based groups Lambchop and Silver Jews. In recent years, Williams has released four records under his own steam, the most recent of which, Goes West, came out in late-January on Merge Records.
Here a bit of language borrowed from M.C. Taylor’s (Hiss Golden Messenger) liner notes for Goes West:
"William is interested in the human capacity for understanding ourselves ... he is one of the most profound autodidacts I know, and he seems to be chasing knowledge in support of something he feels sure exists in all of us. The notes beneath the notes."
William is surely a 'profound autodictat', but add to that an artist in the service of experience and community — meaning: the ways in which something beautiful gets manifested and the binding power it has when it’s embraced by a group of enthusiasts.
