02-28-19 | Songs for Listening | Cicely Mitchell
Cicely Mitchell, co-founder of Durham's The Art of Cool Festival and the president of Art of Cool Project, made the Thursday, February 28 list at Songs for Listening. Cicely started the Art of Cool Festival (AoC) in 2014 as a joint venture with jazz trumpeter Al Strong. (She and Al sold the festival to The DOME Group in 2018; Cicely continues to work on the event in a consulting capacity.) In addition to her work on AoC, Cicely works as the global director of biostatistics for Pharm-Olam International.
In building AoC, Cicely worked ahead of the curve, programming one of the most consistently progressive music festivals in the nation. In its first four years, AoC featured artists including Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Anderson .Paak, GoldLink, Snarky Puppy, Thundercat, The Internet, and Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, amongst dozens of others. With this programming, Cicely offered a world-class showcase for forward-thinking black art in Durham — her good ears, flawless intuition, and enormous hard work have made a substantial and enduring contribution to the scene and the city.
