10-24-19 | Songs for Listening | George Holt
George Holt, the recently retired founding director of performing arts and film programs at the North Carolina Museum of Art, picked tunes for Thursday, October 24 at Songs for Listening.
Here's a note from George on his picks:
"These are all drawn from albums I listen to frequently. I especially admire the production work of Joe Henry, who brings out the very best of the wonderful artists he chooses to assist. World Circuit Records & Nonesuch Records are labels with exquisite production & curatorial expertise."
George has devoted much of his career to promoting folk and traditional arts & roots music after serving as assistant music coordinator at the Smithsonian Institution’s Festival of American Folklife in 1973. He produced the first N.C. Folklife Festival the following year on the Duke University campus, and directed a much larger scale version of the event for the nation’s bicentennial celebration. He established the Office of Folklife Programs within the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources in 1977 where he undertook numerous festival productions, touring programs and documentary projects. He served as programming director of the Southern Crossroads Festival, a celebration of artistic traditions from the American south held in conjunction with the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 that was attended by more than 3 million people. George currently chairs the board of the National Council of Traditional Arts, the nation’s oldest non-profit organization dedicated to the support and presentation of folk and traditional arts.
