Oboist and founding member of Imani Winds, Toyin Spellman-Diaz picked tunes for Thursday, September 19 at Songs for Listening.
Imani Winds, GRAMMY nominated and celebrating 20 years of music making has led both a revolution and the evolution of the wind quintet through their virtuoso playing, adventurous programming, outreach endeavors and dynamic collaborations (including projects with Wayne Shorter, Jason Moran, and Paquito D'Rivera).
As an orchestral musician, Toyin has performed in the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony, the American Symphony Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Orpheus, and Orchestra of St. Lukes. She has performed numerous solo works with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Manhattan Virtuosi, the Antara Ensemble and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC where she was hailed as having a “smooth, controlled tone & excellent technique” by the Washington Post.
Her chamber music credits outside of Imani Winds include playing with such esteemed groups as Alarm Will Sound & Camerata Pacifica. Toyin graduated from Oberlin Conservatory where she achieved her BoM and received her MFA and Professional Studies degrees from Manhattan School of Music. She is on faculty at Brooklyn College.
